A Message from Sourhouse’s Co-Founders re: Hurricane Helene

Bakers! Asheville needs our help and yours.

On September 27th, 2024 Hurricane Helene created catastrophic flooding, power outages and water shortages in Asheville, NC and the surrounding region.

Our hearts go out to the hundreds of families that have lost loved-ones and thousands of people who lost their livelihoods.

Asheville is the hometown of Sourhouse co-founder Erik Fabian and several of our extended team of contractors, partners and baker friends. Erik and family are safe and all of our team are stable.

Many thousands of families are still at risk.

Asheville is also the headquarters of Sourhouse. As a largely online business with a distributed team, other than Erik being offline for several days and some customer service delays, we escaped largely unscathed.

Thousands of local businesses are still in crisis. Many businesses were literally washed away by flooding. Just a mile from Erik’s home, flooding took out breweries, schools, parks, art supply stores, auto parts stores, and restaurants.

At Sourhouse, we have decided to help direct resources into Asheville in the coming days and we need your help.

Sourhouse has made an initial donation on October 3rd to a local charity Beloved Asheville that is distributing urgently needed supplies in Asheville.

We will be donating all of our profits from the month of October to Asheville relief projects.

We have our ears to the ground in Asheville and will be distributing our donations and spending our time where it will do the most good.

We love the generous spirit of the sourdough community. We hope you will join us in directing your sourdough generosity towards the recovery of the Sourdough Capital of the South - Asheville, NC.

Here is a short list of charities doing work on the ground right now. Most of them are local orgs where you know your funds will go directly to recovery:

People are rallying throughout the country to help our region. I am sure you will take inspiration like we do from the grit and generosity we are seeing among our neighbors and businesses across the region.
