  • Follow 10 days of guided starter care and observations
  • Explore fermentation through experiments and activities
  • Connect baking with science, math, history, and geography

Grow It. Study It. Bake With It.

Sourdough is more than bread—it’s a living science experiment your child can feed, observe, and bake with. This collaborative kit from BāKIT Box and Sourhouse guides young bakers through growing their own starter with flour and water while discovering how wild yeast, helpful bacteria, time, and temperature work together.

Once the starter is active, kids will put it to work in two delicious ways: a crackly, golden sourdough loaf and a batch of crispy, herb-flecked crackers made with starter discard.

Along the way, they’ll keep daily field notes, test how temperature affects fermentation, explore the gluten web, experiment with carbon dioxide, practice ratios, design bread-scoring patterns, and discover sourdough traditions from Egypt, Italy, and the United States.

What’s Included

  • Pre-measured bread flour
  • Pre-measured salt
  • Sourhouse Starter Jar with silicone lid
  • Gold silicone marking band
  • Starter-naming stickers

Meet the Sourhouse Starter Jar

Designed specifically for growing and maintaining sourdough starter, the Sourhouse Starter Jar makes it easy for kids to observe every bubble and change.

Its clear, straight-sided borosilicate glass helps young bakers mix, measure, and track their starter’s growth. Measurement dots show how much the starter has risen, while the movable gold silicone band marks its starting height. The soft silicone lid helps keep the jar clean while allowing fermentation gases to escape.

The Sourhouse Bread Blanket (Gold)

The included Sourhouse Bread Blanket becomes part of the experience from proofing to serving. Use it to cover rising dough, line a proofing bowl, or wrap and carry the finished loaf.

Made from 100% cotton, the generously sized 34-by-34-inch blanket can accommodate loaves in a variety of shapes and sizes.
